How Wearable Tech Is Changing The Sports Industry

This week the Fitness & Sports Wearable Technology Conference FAST took place in New York, as part of the Wearable Tech Expo. With Pivothead and adidas two large brands in the wearable tech industry gave some insights of their products and on ways to use them.

Pivothead sells glasses that are equipped with an HD camera that is placed between the eyebrows, guaranteeing hands and distraction free recording and capturing during activities. In other words, you have the same effect as putting a GoPro camera on top of your head, only without looking goofy. Pivothead’s two models Kudu and Durango can be bought in different colors and are both connectable to the Pivothead mobile app. But Christopher Cox, founder and president of Pivothead, didn’t talk much about the technical details of his creations. Instead he focused on ways to use his product. He gave some amazing insights on how broadcasting, brands and companies in the sport industry could take advantage.

Northside Tradeshow 2014 Roundup

northside_stageOn June 12- 13, 2014 technologists, hackers, entrepreneurs and artists came together for the annual Northside Tradeshow, which was held as part of the Northside Festival in Brooklyn and featured tracks on innovation, music and film. A range of companies, from mobile apps to 3D printing companies, and vertical garden manufacturers, had set up a booth in the giant 50,000-square-foot tent in the McCarren Park. Expedition PR was also part of this year’s exhibitors, offering PR and marketing counsel to startups and free copies of its Startup Marketing eBook series.

Here are three cool companies that I spotted at the festival:

Ussemble, an app that lets you capture and share ideas for activities that you’re interested in doing with your friends and make plans around those ideas. The Ussemble team is still testing and perfecting their app, but you can already download it and give feedback.
Tiggly, a New York-based company that develops interactive toys and apps for the digital generation. Their debut product, Tiggly Shapes, combines physical objects with iPad technology and creates great learning games for children between 18 months and 4 years old. The app helps toddlers and preschoolers develop spatial reasoning, motor skills, language, and creativity.

NYC BigApps Competition Wants Your Big Ideas to Improve Life and Work in New York City

Wanted are technology solutions that help improve resource management, education, health and public safety, among other challenges

On May 6, a diverse mix of of developers, engineers, designers, marketers and content experts, gathered at the AppNexus office in Manhattan for the NYC BigApps 2014 kick-off.  New York City’s 5th Annual BigApps is a four-month competition that awards technology products that best solve major challenges affecting New York City residents, visitors, and businesses. Participants can win cash prizes, products, special recognitions, and the chance that their product will get adopted by a civic group or city agency.

 

By giving access to government agency data, NYC BigApps has helped launch nearly 300 apps designed to improve the life and work of New Yorkers since its creation in 2009. Last year’s BigApps Grand Prize winner was HealthyOut, an app that helps users find and order a healthy restaurant meal for delivery, takeout or browse for healthy dish suggestions when dining out. Since then, the app has expanded its geographic footprint outside of New York. Today’s HealthyOut users can order nutritious meals in more than 500 cities, choosing from more than 20,000 restaurants.

 

This year’s BigApps contestants are encouraged to submit projects that fit into one of the four categories:  Live, Work, Learn, and Play.  At the kick-off event 44 BigApps partners, including city agencies, private companies, civic organizations and educational institutions, had set up a booth to discuss projects needs, ideas and available data with the attendees. Projects can run the gamut from mobile and web apps, connected devices, data tools, games, and other technology products.

On an ongoing bases we have reported about the Brooklyn tech evolvement over the last couple of years. But beside Brooklyn’s flagships such as the Brooklyn Navy Yard or DUMBO, smaller organizations also contribute to Brooklyn’s growing tech environment. One of them is Brooklyn Research.org, a co-research space for independent and privately funded researchers that build new technology in Brooklyn. Founded in 2012, Brooklyn Research offers prototyping facilities and workspace to a handful of full-time research members. I had the chance to talk to Alex Dodge, co-founder at Brooklyn Research and partner at the for profit consultancy Brooklyn Research, about Brooklyn, Tech and future projects:
ExpeditionPR: In a nutshell, what is Brooklyn Research about?

Alex Dodge: Brooklyn Research was founded in 2012 as a co-research space for independent and privately funded researchers building new technology in Brooklyn, NY.

Our lab offers prototyping facilities and workspace to a limited number of full-time research members. Membership is granted to applicants with compelling proposals for research in a range of areas and disciplines such as data analytics and visualization, machine learning, computer vision, robotics, fabrication, and wearable / textile-based technology. Brooklyn Research’s 501(c)(3) status is currently pending but we look forward to serving our researchers’ needs and our community more fully soon.

Brooklyn Research’s for profit arm is a full service research and development lab building specialized interactive systems. We work with a range of clients that have included Verizon, Samsung, Unicef, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Brooklyn Research is located at the former Pfizer pharmaceutical factory in Brooklyn, NY.

Booth Marketing at NY Tech Day 2014

What makes a great trade show booth? Flashy signs? Free swag? Booth babes? While these all might seem like nice gimmicks, and might work at attracting eyeballs to your booth, to a certain extent…do they actually help you get the leads you came to the trade show for? While walking the floor at NY Tech Day 2014 I was able to see a little bit of everything, and took note on which hooks were producing leads, and which were just attracting the swag trolls (see photo and guard your giveaways when this attendee approaches your booth). Here are a few of the companies who got it right:

New York Tech Day attendees had numerous possibilities to get discounts, use promo codes and get free trials, as seen at UBER’s or at the Dash’s booth.

 

Seldon Marketing did a great job, with their mini basketball game, that would make you enter a raffle after shooting some hoops to win great prices. Zipmark also bet on physical activities to make people stop by and engage while playing a round of Cornhole.

Most visitors didn’t need to go out for lunch, since marketers and exhibitors were luring the people like the witch in “Hansel and Gretel” with candy, treats and beverages. And the classic trade show giveaways such as pens, mini footballs and can holder were not missing either.

Gilt Tech got attention by taking their Plasma Car for a ride through Pier 92 and directing visitors to their booth.

Pretzel Crisps was driving traffic to their social media channels with the chance to win a Pretzel Crisps party pack for all the Tech Day visitors who would retweet the message.

Kookopa, a fashion community where women can rent closets to and from each other, used walking human billboards for their booth marketing that day. Models actually walking around at Pier 92, showing outfits and holding a sign saying “Love my style? Rent it!” definitely created some buzz.

Some companies didn’t even need any specific booth marketing. Soolidoodle attracted visitors simply by their product, exposing their 3D printer and many people stopped by to see this groundbreaking innovation in action for the first time in their lives.

All in all we were astonished how great the booths looked and what can be done even with a small marketing budget.

Here are our top four picks for tech networking events in Brooklyn:

Brooklyn Tech Meetup: Founded in 2012, the Brooklyn Tech Meetup features Brooklyn tech companies and innovators in its monthly meetings.  Speakers share their views on new tech developments in Brooklyn or talk about their story as a Brooklyn-based business. In addition to meeting inspiring entrepreneurs, you can connect with organizations that can help you start and operate your business, such as the Brooklyn Downtown Alliance or New York City Business Solutions. At every meetup there is plenty of time for networking. There is a small admission fee of about $10. The monthly events are held at different locations. Check out the upcoming meetup here.

Northside Innovation Meetup: Started in 2013, the Northside Innovation Meetup is held monthly at the Brooklyn Brewery and brings together the most exciting and dynamic innovators from Brooklyn and beyond to discuss their ever-changing industries, ideas, challenges and more. Each event has a different theme, but the event format is the same: The events start with presentations by speakers who talk about their “aha”- moment, the moment that actually led them to start the company or find a better way to do business. The keynote presentations are followed by half-hour panel discussion and a Q&A with the audience. After the program ends, attendees stay for networking and food from Mable’s Smokehouse. This is an invitation-only event, with no admission fee. Early sign up is recommended.

Looking for a Career in NYC? Work in Tech

The New York tech industry is one of the city’s largest job creators, and not just in tech. 

According to a just released study conducted by HR&A Advisors and commissioned by the Association for a Better New York, Citi, Google and NY Tech Meetup, , New York City tech ecosystem generates economic opportunities for all New Yorkers.

From 2003 to 2013, the NYC tech ecosystem added 45,000 jobs. The employment rate in the New York tech industry grew faster than the employment rate in New York City and the Nation.

What is special about this study is that the tech industry is treated as part of a greater ecosystem and not as an independent silo. The report defines three types of jobs: 1. tech jobs in the tech industry, 2. non- tech jobs in the tech industry and 3. tech jobs in non- tech industries.

 

Here are some key facts from the report:

  • 58,000 people work in tech occupations in tech industries (e.g. a computer programmer at Google);
  • 83,000 people work in non-tech occupations in tech industries (e.g. a sales representative at Etsy) and
  • 150,000 people work in tech occupations in non-tech industries (e.g. a web developer at Citi).

Tech has become a cross-cutting industry that powers a broad range of other vertical industries, such as healthcare, media and education. With “52% of New York tech ecosystem jobs [being] within non-tech industries” this report underlines this trend.
